Description
Dimensions approx. 22 x 8 x 4 mm Weight about 1.45 g The beautiful seahorse was made from high quality 925 sterling silver. In ancient times, the seahorse was known as a mythical creature called Hippocamp, whose upper body resembled that of a horse and whose lower body consisted of only one tail fin from the waist down. The word Hippocamp is made up of the Greek words for horse (= Hippo) and caterpillar (= Campos). The scientific name "Hippocamp", under which the seahorse has been known since 1570, means nothing more than "horse caterpillar". Many representations from Greece make it clear how much this mythical creature resembles a mermaid. According to mythology, half a horse and half a fish were migratory and riding animals of various sea gods. Greek mythology says that seahorses are said to be even the descendants of the horses that pulled Poseidon's carriage. There is even a remnant of this belief in Walt Disney's cartoon “Arielle”. There, Ariel's father Triton, ruler of the sea, pulls the carriage through the water from seahorses.
