The Shiva eye itself is not a snail or shell, as is often wrongly assumed, but is a kind of protective door for the tropical turban or spinning top snail. That means: if the snail is threatened by its natural enemies, it closes the door and can protect its life. The Latin name of the Shiva eye can also be explained in this way. This is the operculum = lid. The gyroscope lives up to 20m deep and feeds on algae growth that grows on corals or stones. The spiral shape of the Shiva eye on one side and the individual color gradient on the other side reflect the growth of the snail. Depending on how regularly and which algae the animal consumes, the different structures and color nuances arise. The spiral also shows the growth.
